Jazz. Genau hingucken: Die meisten dieser Stücke sind bereits am 24. Februar 2020 eingespielt worden, einige wenige live am 13. September. »Homesongs« verweisen also nicht auf die deprimierende Situation, Musik derzeit nur im Homeoffice der eigenen Seele hören zu können. Umgekehrt: Hubweber, der Posaunist, und Oetz, der Kontrabassist, gehen vom »Home« aus, von einfachen Liedern, »Horch, was kommt von draußen rein«, oder Blues-Klassikern (Blind Faith!), die sie - oder vielmehr: wir alle - aus ihrer Kindheit und Jugend kennen, Lieder, die wir zu Hause gehört haben, Ablagerungen von Melodien und jener Art Swing, die man dann »Ohrwurm« nennt. 

Diese Ohrwürmer verwandeln Oetz und Hubweber lakonisch und ohne falsches Sentiment in knappe Skizzen, denen nichts fehlt, in Lieder, mit denen man sich wieder der Welt öffnet und nach draußen geht, sich der eigenen Geschichte sicher ist und bereit, neue Erfahrungen zu machen. Ja, das ist »traditioneller« Jazz - aber im radikalstmöglichen Zugriff gespielt. Keine Scheu vor Melodien, nur spielen sie sie gleich sam nackt: in offener Form und in einem minimalen Setting, in dem man nichts verheimlichen kann. So lässig, wie Hubweber und Oetz auf treten, haben sie tatsächlich nichts zu verheimlichen. 

Wer unbedingt Referenzen braucht, der sei auf ein imaginäres Meeting von Charlie Haden und Roswell Rudd verwiesen, die einst im Tosen des Free Jazz für die Schlichtheit der Form eintraten. Hubweber und Oetz kommen aus dem Tosen der Kölner Jazz- und Improvisationsszenen und schauen mit staunender Schlichtheit auf die Welt - optimistisch. Felix Klopotek

Look closely: Most of these pieces were recorded on February 24, 2020, a few live on September 13. “Home songs” do not refer to the depressing situation of currently only being able to listen to music in the home office of your own soul. Conversely: Hubweber, the trombonist, and Oetz, the double bass player, start from the »Home«, from simple songs, »Listen, what's coming in from outside«, or blues classics (Blind Faith!), which they - or rather: we all - know from childhood and youth, songs that we heard at home,
deposits of melodies and that kind of swing that is then called "catchy tunes".
Oetz and Hubweber laconically and without false sentiment transform these catchy tunes into short sketches that don't lack anything, into songs with which one opens up to the world again and goes outside, is sure of one's own story and is ready to make new experiences. Yes, that is »traditional« jazz - but played with the most radical possible approach. Not afraid of melodies, they just play them naked, as it were: in an open form and in a minimal setting in which nothing can be concealed. As casual as Hubweber and Oetz appear, they actually have nothing to hide.
Anyone who absolutely needs references should be referred to an imaginary meeting between Charlie Haden and Roswell Rudd, who once advocated the simplicity of form in the roar of free jazz. Hubweber and Oetz emerge from the roar of the Cologne jazz and improvisation scenes and look at the world with astonished simplicity - optimistically. (Translation Ebba Jahn)

The music and the image are paired here. In the gallery, each painting on paper (12 x 16 inches) is exposed next to the one with which it forms a couple because of the suggested movement, composition, colors, patterns and technique used.

Ebba Jahn, the artist, designed a parcour, a path for the trombonist Paul Hubweber to improvise his music in the moment against multiple pairs of paintings, structuring his thought and his musical action. A musical walk in the idea of Pictures at an Exhibition a composition by Modeste Mussorgsky.  
The musician, unaccompanied, therefore solitary, is free to conceive his improvisations or instant compositions inspired by what he sees and observes by appealing to his emotions, his references, his musical practice and his imagination. The exhibited works embrace a broad panorama of conceptions andinterests in what is defined as "abstract art"... oil, graphite, watercolor, vinyl, photo paper, repetitive and shifting patterns, entangled or delicate vegetation. It should be added that Ebba Jahn's film work is focused on improvised music and free jazz, which she brilliantly illustrated with the now classic 16 mm film Rising Tones Cross (1984).

Replaying these 28 minutes with closed eyes, we are struck by the coherence of 
each of the improvisations gradually coming together in a great sensitive and 
poetic work of the trombone, melodic, sonorous, resulting from jazz and his 
experience as a free improviser. 
In each piece played opposite a pair of paper, the trombonist chooses a particular
element of one of them (of the two!): Shape, color, texture, rhythm, space that 
he interprets by creating in turn frankly almost mimetic, elliptical, tangential, 
distant. We hear the blue color in its nuances, the pointillist detail, the movement
of the lines, the flow of the water tinted on the paper. 
Ebba Jahn projected his dreams, his struggles, his ideal and we hear the breath of
Paul Hubweber express the sap, the fruit, spread the seed in our auditory 
imagination; the viewer may guess at what element of the picture  the musician 
refers to. Free to all, the listeners, the painter, the musician and you who 
contemplate the video, to understand and interpret the evolution of this dialogue 
in time and space.

The visit of the Paper Pairs ends, summed up by a melody - an infinite ritornello that delivers Paul Hubweber's latest impressions of Ebba Jahn's exhibition and the emotion of the spectators, by placing himself at the back of the room and addressing the receptive and amazed audience. If each painting has nourished the work of the musician, his music reinforces the raison d'être of the Paper Pairs and transcends it.

     Die Musik und die Bilder formen hier ein Paar. In der Galerie hängt jedes Bild auf Papier 30 x 40 cm groß neben dem, mit dem es ein Paar bildet, entweder aufgrund einer innewohnenden Bewegung, der Komposition, der Farben, des Motivs oder der angewandten Technik.
Die Künstlerin Ebba Jahn hat für den Posaunisten Paul Hubweber einen Rahmen, einen Parkur geschaffen, in dem seine Musik durch Improvisationen entstehen kann.

Dies geschieht im Einklang mit den vielen Bildpaaren, ganz im 
Augenblick, sein musikalisches Denken und Handeln strukturierend. 
Ein musikalischer Spaziergang im Sinne Bilder einer Ausstellung, einer Komposition von
Modeste Mussorksky- Der Musiker, der hier solo spielt, lässt sich von dem was er sieht und 
beobachtet inspirieren. Er lässt seinenEmotionen freien Lauf und seine Improvisationen 
und seine spontanen Kompositionen folgen nur seinen Referenzen, seiner musikalischen 
Praxis und seiner Imagination.  

Die ausgestellten Werke von 24 KünstlerInnen umfassen ein weites Spektrum verschiedener 
Interessen und Vorstellungen, die man üblicherweise mit „abstrakter Kunst“ bezeichnet, 
Öl, Graphit, Aquarell, Acryl, Fotos, sich wiederholende und wechselnde Muster und 

Bewegungen, verschlungende oder zarte Vegetationen, Verzerrungen oder Beschwichtigungen. 
Sollte noch hinzugefügt werden, dass mehrere Videos von Ebba Jahn improvisierte Musik 
und Free Jazz zeigen, brilliant in dem Film Rising Tones Cross (1984) umgesetzt. 

               
Wenn man sich noch einmal die 27 Minuten mit geschlossenen Augen anhört, beeindruckt die
Kohärenz der einzelnen Improvisationen, die sich allmählich zu Teilen eines großen, poetischen
und sensiblen Werkes (Posaunenstücks) zusammensetzen, melodische Sonoritäten, 
hervorgehend aus dem Jazz und der improvisierten Musik. In jeder Komposition wählt der 
Posaunist ein Element aus dem Bildpaar: Form, Farbe, Textur, Rhythmus, Raum, interpretiert 
es nach und nach musikalisch, frei heraus, fast nachahmend, elliptisch, tangential, sich 
entfernend. Wir hören die blaue Farbe in ihren Nuancen, das pointillistische Detail, die 
Bewegung der Linien, den Fluss des auf dem Papier gefärbten Wassers. Den Betrachtern steht 
es frei zu erraten auf welches Bildelement der Musiker sich bezieht. Die HörerInnen die 
MalerInnen, der Musiker und Sie selbst, die sich das Video anschauen, haben die Freiheit, die
Entwicklung des Dialoges in Zeit und Raum zu verstehen und zu interpretieren.

Der Besuch der Paper Pairs endet mit einer Melodie, einem unendlichen Reim, der die letzten
Eindrücke von Paul Hubweber und die Emotionen des Betrachters zusammenfasst, indem er 
sich im Raum plaziert, mit dem Rücken zur Ecke des Saales und sich dem aufgeschlossenen 
undstaunenden Publikum zuwendet. Wenn auch jedes Bild die kreative Arbeit des Musikers 
beeinflusst hat, verstärkt seine Musik die Realität der Austellung und transzendiert sie.

La musique et l’image font ici la paire. Dans la galerie, chaque peinture sur papier (format A3) est exposée en vis-à-vis de celle avec qui elle forme un couple en raison du mouvement suggéré, de la composition, des couleurs, des motifs et de la technique employée. Ebba Jahn, l’artiste, a conçu une trame, un cheminement pour que le tromboniste Paul Hubweber construise (invente – improvise) sa musique dans l’instant face aux multiples paires de tableaux, structurant ainsi sa pensée et son action musicales. Une promenade musicale dans l’idée de Mussorkski.. Le musicien, non accompagné, donc solitaire, est libre de concevoir ses improvisations ou compositions instantanées en s’inspirant de ce qu’il voit et observe en faisant appel à ses émotions, ses références, sa pratique musicale et son imagination. Les œuvres exposées embrassent un large panorama de conceptions et de centres d’intérêt dans ce qu’il est convenu de définir par « art abstrait »… huile, graphite, aquarelle, vinyle, papier photo, motifs répétitifs et mouvants, végétation enchevêtrée ou délicate, contorsions ou apaisement… Faut –il ajouter que l’œuvre d’Ebba Jahn est focalisée sur la musique improvisée et le free jazz qu’elle a illustré brillamment avec le film désormais classique Rising Tones Cross (1984).

En réécoutant ces 27 minutes les yeux fermés on est frappé par la cohérence de chacune des improvisations s’emboitant progressivement dans une grande œuvre sensible et poétique du trombone, mélodique, sonore, issue du jazz et son expérience d’improvisateur libre. Dans chaque pièce jouée en regard d’une paire de papier, le tromboniste choisit un élément particulier de l’un d’eux ( des deux !) : forme, couleur, texture, rythme, espace qu’il interprète en créant tour à tour de manière franche quasi mimétique, elliptique, tangentielle, éloignée. On entend la couleur bleue dans ses nuances, le détail pointilliste, le mouvement des traits, l’écoulement de l’eau teintée sur le papier. Ebba Jahn y a projeté ses rêves, ses combats, son idéal et on entend le souffle de Paul Hubweber en exprimer la sève, le fruit, en répandre la semence dans notre imagination auditive. Au spectateur de deviner à quel élément du tableau se réfère le musicien. Libre à tous, les auditeurs, la peintre, le musicien et vous qui contemplez la vidéo, de comprendre et interpréter l’évolution de ce dialogue dans le temps et l’espace.

La visite des Paper Pairs se clôtur, résumée par une mélopée - ritournelle infinie qui délivre les dernières impressions de Paul Hubweber de l’exposition d’Ebba Jahn et l’émotion des spectateurs, en s’étant plaçant dos à l’angle de la salle et en s’adressant au public réceptif et émerveillé. Si chaque tableau a nourri le travail du musicien, sa musique renforce la raison d’être des Paper Pairs et la transcende.
